Tips for Creating an Online Store

Thumbnail Images Revamped!

We just changed the way the product thumbnail images are displayed. They are now intelligently cropped into squares which makes them line up nicely on your page.  In many cases they also look sharper because they are not stretched.  Enjoy!

While this feature has been under discussion for a while, we have come to the conclusion that the benefits of it outweigh the downsides. After browsing through the stores and seeing how great they are all looking, I think this was a good choice.

    Here are the benefits:
    1. Your thumbnails are less likely to appear grainy or pixelated, so your products will look better.

    2. You can upload an image of any dimensions and be guaranteed that it won’t mess up the layout of your product pages. This saves you time.

    3. Your product pages will look cleaner overall because all the images are lined up in a grid.

    4. Your product detail pages will look cleaner because the mini-thumbnails will be lined up in a grid.

    5. Your products will look good on our upcoming product search feature, where customers can search all products across our stores (to be released next week)

The only real downside to the square cropping is that sometimes parts of the image will be cut out that you don’t want to be cut out. We have carefully designed it so that most of the time this won’t happen. We use the same cropping method that is used by Flickr, the leading application for sharing photos on the web.
